Take care! ;)

No llores...

Ines:       "Oh, I'm going to cry..."

Romeu:   "No llores, Ines..."

Ines:       "Porque?"

Romeu:   "Porque eres muy guapa para llorar..."

* Ines hugs Romeu *

Erasmus!

A now, for something completely different...

Yehudit Ravitz - Sof La'sipur

Letra/Lyrics:

both truth and fabrication,
all that was - as if never happened
faded in a blink of an eye
and only you, still..
again the tears, on the makeup

and the smile, still sewn on,
now splits from your lips, departs you

all the magic tricks, ended and gone
all the lights, have gathered
the time that has no healing
slipped away, floated like a wonder
and only the sweat, on the face
a squashed hat, empty of rabbits
all the spectators got up already,
all the applause has silenced
the doves have flown away

theres no surprises, in the story
tears again, on the makeup
the party ends, the mask drops.
and tears again, on the makeup
and the smile, still sewn on
now splits from your lips, departs you
and an end to the story

My head got blown away.

Sunrise and sunset...

Sunrise time:

- Porto: 07:20

- Tampere: 08:27

 Sunset time:

- Porto: 17:17

- Tampere: 15:50

Length of the day:

- Porto: 9h57

- Tampere: 7h23

 Important comparison (in Tampere):
- length of the day: 7h23
- length of the night: 16h37

"Parental income has no effect on student eligibility: students are eligible to receive a total of EUR500 (US$700) in welfare payments per month, comprising a study grant of EUR298 and EUR202 housing support. These sums are not repayable and students can also apply for a student loan of up to EUR300 per month.

They are even eligible for subsidised lunches (they pay about half price), almost free healthcare, discounted public transport fares and discounts for social and cultural activities such as theatres and museums. But academic progress is required to guarantee a continuous ride on the gravy train. Students with children (about 9%) can also get additional non-education support."

A Finlândia e o frio

Na Finlândia: "Ok, the fire alarm is ringing, so we have to go out. Take your coats."

In the side of one door in the Tampere University of Technology, here in Finland. I don't really get it... it must be the Finnish way! :P lol

The computers of the University, where we do *high speed* electronic circuits simulations. They want to buy pentium IV to replace them, but they have been unsuccessful until now. I told the teacher "In Portugal we have fast computers and LCD screens. These computers and screens we put in the corridors of the University for the students to take them home." LOL

Gripe A, versão finlandesa. Flu A virus, Finnish version.

Fica aqui a prova:

Lugar estranho...

Helsinki - Part II

So, continuing the previous post...

After 9h we continued our tour throught Helsinki.
Everything is really near to each other, so we were able to visit some more famous places of the city just by walking. Of course that after a night in the sky without sleeping and lots of hours walking around Helsinki we were pretty tired, and at 16h we were already in the hostel dying lol

But now some more photos of the Finnish capital!

The Parliament

Helsinki's train station (were we got the train for Tampere the next day)

The National Theatre

The Cathedral of Helsinki. Beautiful!

The Orthodox Church of Helsinki

The view from our room at the hostel :)

Oh, and this day we discovered three amazing facts:

- there is no shutters in Finland. You know, shutter for the windows. I had to get used to sleep with light on the room. After three weeks here it's not a problem anymore, you get so tired that your body gets used to it.

- the showers. The showers are on the floor. I mean, there is no tub, nor a place for the shower, you just stand up on the floor on the shower zone and pull the curtains. It's strange but it works. Still, it's kind of sad that you have free hot water and no tub to fill! I haven't seen a single tub in Finland! xD

- the little showers beside the toilet. Yes, it's true. In a lot of WCs, just beside the toilet, you have small shower you can use to clean yourself better =P

And that's it for this post. Next post: arrival at Tampere! Don't miss it! eheh ;)

P.S.: I know this blog is not up to date, but you have to forgive me, becausa Erasmus life is very hard, we have to party study a lot and we are always going out in classes. I'll try to do the updates as fast as possible! =)

C ya all later! ;)

Helsinki - part I

From there we entered the bus to Helsinki center and started thinking about the differences and similarities between Portugal and Finland. Well, first not much: the traffic signals and different background colours, there are lots of people on the street and in the highways at 6h15, simple things. Then, some nice things: every house and building simply and beautifully designed, with a very clean and organized aspect; large streets and parking lots; trees everywhere; people on highways going to work, not crossing neighbourhoods or cities, but forest.

Once in Helsinki I started questioning all my prejudices, and what everyone told me... Of course, the city was beautiful, calm, secure, organized, but... the people crossed the street with the red light on, there was trash on the floor (a lot of trash in some places), there were shopping centers everywhere, there were people begging on the streets (all foreigners). Still, many good things were visible: art and bicycles everywhere, large streets, polite people, a beautiful city.

And then, there was the trip through some of the cities main, and some not really main, attractions.

The Finnish parliament
The national museum
Finlandia Hall
One of the amazing Helsinki parks, where I almost got ridden over by some bikes, several times
And take a look at some of the views in Helsinki... just beautiful...

The lake of the park
The lake again
Finlandia Hall seen from the lake
A street of the city

This is some of the things we saw until 9h of the morning. Through the day there were some more...
I'll continue tomorrow, 'cause it's already too late (yeah, here it's +2h than in Portugal!) and tomorrow is the day when the real Erasmus starts! ;)

Maia -> Lisboa -> Helsinki

So, the big day had arrived! With the luggages prepared, and having spent the afternoon with my parents (who didn't cried when I departed, but smiled -_-!) there I went to Lisbon!

With my camera prepared I photographed everything! Well, almost... The flight departed at 22h20, but I had to be there 2 hours before... Here, you can see my panic face just before entering the airport... the ultimate panic!
After 2 hours of waiting, receiving phone call and messages (thanks!! ;) ), and a great amount of anxiety, the time to enter the plane arrived.

So, there I was, going to the other corner of Europe... The trip went fine, but I couldn't sleep nor rest. It lasted for 4h40 and as I was close to the window I could see the lights of cities of Spain, France, Denmark, Sweden and Finland, as the sunrise coming from the horizon. We arrived at 5h (local hour, GMT+2) at Helsinki. The plane finally stopped and through the window I saw the giant light characters saying "HELSINKI-VANTAA", and then it hit me that sensation of "WOW, I'm in Helsinki!! Awesome!!!".

The Helsinki airport was nice, as you can see in the pictures, even though the employees were not that smart, since we only were able to find our luggage after about 30 minutes of searching and asking for the place were we should pick it. And I just thought "And we think bad of Portugal...". My image of perfection of the nordic countries was starting to fall apart.
